Mothers® 7th Annual Shine Award
Presented to Dennis McClendon for his
1962 Chevrolet Bel Air “ShowLow”

An international panel of judges consisting of industry experts, hobbyists and past Shine winners spent nearly two days non-stop deliberating on the 7th Annual Mothers® Shine Award competition at the 2007 SEMA Show.

After considering hundreds of worthy rides, the 2007 Mothers Shine Award has been presented to a 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air bubble top named  ShowLow, owned by Dennis and Barb McClendon of Mesa, Ariz. Proving a Shine Award winner doesn t need to come from a major car building shop, Dennis McClendon, who also worked on the engine and other mechanicals of the build, exclaimed  this is one for the little guys upon hearing news of the award.

The second Shine trophy, which is traditionally given to a winner s builder, is expected to be shared with Rich Thayer of Chicago, who laid the Maserati red and GT white finish and master fabricator Bryan Butler of Buckley, Wash, who did the extensive tin work. This cool ride was built by this small team which also included interior specialist Denny John of Van Buren, Ark. With over 100 body modifications, this chopped, stretched, cut and wedged Chevy features a 409 bored & stroked to 484 CI with a one-off vintage Algon fuel injection mated to a Richmond 6-speed and a Currie rear with 4.10:1 gears. The low-slung tube chassis has Air Ride suspension, Morrison spindles and A-arms, Baer brakes, 19 and 20 Colorado Custom Wheels with Pirelli tires. A collector of rare and factory experimental  62s, McClendon also owns the fastest 409 car in the world. Build time was 3 years and an estimated 12,000 hours. In addition to the Shine, the following Mothers® Choice Awards were also presented (in random order) to:

1940 Ford Pickup  Jim Duffle, owner; Steve Legens/Legens Hot Rods, builder. This hot rod truck features a 350 CI ZZ4 crate motor mated to a Turbo 350 trans with a 9 Ford rear under a mild chop with a custom grille. It s painted with Speis Hecker in silver/gray. Time to build was 2 years. (Located in booth #23287, Central Hall.)

2008 Scion xD  Scion, owner; Troy Sumitomo/Five Axis, builder. This sport compact features special bodywork and PPG paint. (Located in Scion booth #20703, behind Central Hall.)

2006 Dodge Charger  Scott Eineman, owner; Killer Kustomz, builder. A contemporary design featuring a 6.4L Hemi with a Hahn Race Craft twin turbo producing 625 hp covered in Hotmarks Custom Paint. Time to build was 6 months. (Located in booth #24265, Central Hall.)

1957 Oldsmobile Fiesta Wagon  Bruce Ricks, owner; Cimtex Rods, builder. A restomod featuring a 371 CI J-2 with three 2-barrel carburetors and a Jetaway transmission. Custom-mixed PPG paint by Tim and Darrell Cimbanin of Cimtex. Time to build was 2.5 years. (Located outside North Hall.)

Salt Flat Racer  Speed Demon Streamliner  George Poteet and Ron Main, owners; Nemesis Air Racing, builder. This race car features a turbocharged 3.0 L Dodge Midget motor producing 1,100 hp and mated to a liberty 5-speed gearbox. (Located in the front of Center Hall.)

1969 Chevrolet Camaro  David Sharpe, owner; J-Rod & Custom/Jared Rushforth, builder; Jason Rusforth, designer. This pro-touring features an LS7 motor mated to a 4L60E transmission and Corvette inspiration on the custom front body paint and grille work. Build time was 16 months. (Located in the South ramp of Central Hall, adjacent to the Hot Wheels and Ford booths.)

2008 Ford F-450  Doug Deberti, owner; Deberti Design, builder. Features a 6.4L Power Stroke Diesel V8 and 5-speed automatic. The Dallas Smith front wheel-drive conversion provides for an axle-less rear suspension to accommodate a unique cargo lift optimized for motorcycle hauling. (Located in the Ford booth, Central Hall.)

1935 Ford 3-Window Coupe  Doug & Florida Hoppe, owners; Lakeside Rods & Rides, builder; Jason Rushforth, designer. This street rod has an all-steel Henry Ford Body that was cut and sectioned 2-1/2 and painted in E-State green by PPG. Also features a Roush 402 CI 8-stack fuel injection motor mated to a C4 transmission. (Located in the South ramp of Central Hall, adjacent to the Hot Wheels and Ford booths.)

SR 392  Michael Chetcuti, owner; Shadow Rods and Wheel to Wheel, builders; Ralph Gilles and Mark Allen of Chrysler, designers. Based on a modified XL  27 T body, this roadster features a 392 HEMI crate motor mated to a 727 3-speed automatic and 9 rear. Paint is Wheel to Wheel catalyzed urethane. Build time was 12 weeks. (Located in Chrysler booth #42427, South Hall.)

2008 Callaway C16 Speedster  Callaway Cars. This sports car features a 6.2L LS3 powerplant producing 700 hp and mated to a 6-speed transaxle. Painted in azure pearl, it also has speedster screens, integrated helmets, carbon fiber wheels and carbon ceramic brakes. Build time was 6 weeks. (Located in the Stop-Tech Brakes booth #24341 in Central Hall.)

1963 Chevrolet Impala SS  Christian Prusia, owner; Eckerts Rod & Custom, builder. Features a Corvette LS7 engine with a 6-speed Corvette gearbox and painted in PPG arctic silver. This  family car has a 50/50 weight distribution. (Located in the North Hall, booth #11170.)

1950 Mercury  Mercules  Bruno Gianoncelli, owner; Rod & Custom Garage (Perth, Western Australia), builder. This custom features a supercharged Ford V10 and a Jaguar IRS with custom billet parts. Painted in House of Kolor custom-mixed candy blue and candy marble, it also has a custom milled alloy grille and full metal dash and interior. Build time was 3 years. (Located in the House of Kolor booth #23513.)

The Shine Award trophy, rendered by esteemed automotive artist Steve Posson, is a 20-pound bronze statuette of a detailer s towel shaped like a flame. The recipient of the Shine Award trophy is decided upon by a panel of judges comprised of well-respected members of the aftermarket automotive industry who intend to recognize the one standout vehicle of the more than 1,500 at the show based on overall appearance, level of attention to detail, integration of stock and custom elements, quality of paint and finish, and original vision and ultimate execution of the initial concept.

The Mothers® Shine Award and Mothers Choice Awards were presented on Wednesday, October 31st at 4:00 p.m. at the 2007 SEMA Show.
